3. Description of test standards
The blanket combustion tester tests samples in accordance with ASTM D4151.
The process of sample preparation and testing is complicated.
Samples can be prepared and tested according to the instructions.
The main steps of the blanket combustion tester operation manual and some useful tips are presented below.
The instrument is completed in strict accordance with the standard drawings and fully meets and can achieve the test content required by the standard.
Ignition time can be set at will, accurately recording to 0.01s.
The instrument includes: (1) flow meter: adjust the gas flow.
(2) Fire spout pipe: the gas is connected to the flow meter through the hose first, and then through the hose at the back of the box into the fire spout pipe.
(3) Windshield plate: the upper part of the windshield plate is arranged with glass.
The test was carried out in a fume hood. A circular hole at the top of the cabinet and a gap in the windshield plate caused convection currents of gas.
(4) Control panel: POWER-power switch;
Start: Start the internal motor operation. After the fire spout tube is moved to the test position (the vertical distance from the sample center is 8mm, and the horizontal distance is 3.2mm), touch the internal timing switch.
Reset: Timer Reset/fire tube Reset.
(5) Test fixture and test stand.
There are knobs on the sample frame substrate which can be adjusted to move left and right. By loosening and tightening the knobs, the sample frame substrate can be moved and fixed.
(6) Timer: Display the setting and actual ignition time.
Only after the time is cleared can the fire tube complete the required movement, otherwise the fire tube cannot return to the initial position after moving forward.
Analysis of test steps:
After sample preparation and instrument debugging, place the assembled sample fixture on the sample clamp.
Open the coal gas valve and supply gas to the fire pipe.
Aim an electronic igniter at the spitfire.
Press the START key on the control panel. Under the action of mechanical transmission, the fire spout pipe moves forward to the test position, and the test sample and test paper on the sample fixture are ignited.
Ignition simultaneously starts the timing system, and the control panel displays the frequency to record the ignition time.
After 1s, the fire tube moved back, the timer stopped, and the test ended.
Finally, take off the sample and test paper for rating.
A Equipment debugging:
Make sure the blanket combustion tester is operational.
(1) Adjust the position of the fire pipe
With the help of the height gauge, the vertical distance between the spray pin and the test specimen is 8mm.
The sample frame is moved so that the sample message is 3.2mm away from the spray needle head during the test.
(2) Adjust the ignition time
Set the ignition time on the timer panel.
Press the start button and the fire tube moves down to the test position driven by the motor. After staying for a certain period of time (that is, the ignition time), the fire tube moves back.
The time of stay is displayed on the timer. If the time is consistent with the set ignition time, the instrument can be used normally.
(3) Adjust the flame length
Check that the installation process of the instrument has been completed according to the operation manual.
Turn on the gas supply (using methane, technical grade, purity >97.0%), in a ventilated environment, empty for a certain time;
Make sure the instrument is powered on, turn off the fume hood and adjust the flame length to 16mm(5/8 in.) after ignition.
The flame length is measured by the flame length gauge in the attachment.
Tip: Before adjusting the height of the flame, it is necessary to empty (remove the air from the pipe). The standard time for empting is at least 5 minutes. To ensure your safety, this step must be done in a fume hood or other well-ventilated environment.
When adjusting the flame length, the ventilation equipment will be turned off to avoid the influence of wind speed.
Note: Note the use of height gauges and flame length gauges.
The height gauge is clamped into the sample fixture, and the flame blowout pipe is moved to touch the center of the gauge, which meets the standard requirements.
When adjusting the flame length, align the flame length gauge to the side of the flame. The width of the flame length gauge is the flame length required by the standard.
B Sample preparation:
(1) Cut out 10 samples to be tested and standard burning test paper
Tip: After the test, the surface combustion state of the standard combustion test paper will be evaluated, so as to judge the combustion performance of the sample.
The size of 10 samples is 70mm×70mm. 5 samples are marked on the front and 5 samples on the back.
The 10 standard combustion test papers are 70mm×90mm in size, with a 50mm diameter circle hollowed out in the middle.
Tip: Perform 5 combustion tests on both sides of the sample.
The standard combustion test paper is NNN-P-40B, no. 2 lens paper.

(2) Bristle treatment
Each surface villi sample should be treated first with a bristle tool, which is not required for non-villi samples.
Standard provides a bristle device that meets this test.
Tip: The bristle device can be used in 45° combustion tester.
The vertical pressure on bristles is 75±10g.
(3) Install the sample in the sample fixture
The samples are installed in the fixture, and the installation sequence is as follows: lower splint → sample → standard combustion test paper → upper splint.
When installing, make sure that the test sample is flat and the test sample and the burning test paper are in the center of the fixture.
For thin specimens, clamp in the fitting.
Note: As 5 sample fixtures are included in the attachment, 5 samples (together with standard combustion test paper) can be loaded into the corresponding fixture at a time.
All 5 samples are facing or facing up.
(4) Sample humidification
Put the sample into the oven and dry it for 30min.
The oven temperature is 105±3℃.
The sample is then dried on the desiccant for 30-60min.
Tip: Do not touch the surface of the sample after brushing when taking the sample. Do not put more than 5 samples after drying on the desiccant at one time.
C Start the experiment.
(1) Start the experiment
Place the assembled and dried samples (test fixture) on the test rack.
Tip: If the sample has been pretreated, the test operation should start at this time.
The standard states that the test shall begin within 30s of the sample being removed from the dryer.
(2) Turn on the main power of the instrument to the open state.
Set the ignition time to 1s on the timer to start the test
Turn on the instrument start button to make the instrument start working. The burner ignites to start the flame impact. At the same time, the timer automatically starts the timing.
5 samples (face or face) were tested consecutively, and the other 5 samples were dried for subsequent tests.
Tip: Before the test, make sure that the sample has been installed on the test stand correctly and the correct automatic flame impact time has been set as 1s.
D Classification of fabrics

Tip: Classify the fabric by the surface state of the standard combustion test paper.
Evaluation of bedding fabrics by category
No combustion, carbonization or discoloration occurred on any of the 10 standard combustion test papers of grade 1.
Combustion, carbonization and discoloration occur in one or more of the 10 standard combustion test papers of grade 2.
