Brief introduction of rubbing color fastness tester


AATCC dry and wet rubbing color fastness tester is used by American Textile Chemists and printing and dyeing workers.

The friction fastness meter measures the ability of a fabric to transfer color from the surface to other materials under dry and wet friction conditions.

In addition to performing color transfer tests, the instrument can perform abrasion, dry/wet friction, flexure, pulverization, dry cleaning, grinding and other tests.

The standard pressure and motion mode are adopted to ensure the condition of the sample is controllable and repeatable.


There are three types of electric and manual rotating friction fastness instruments: traditional manual friction fastness instrument CSI238AA, electric friction fastness instrument CSI238BB, and manual rotary friction fastness instrument CSI238EE.

The rubbing colour fastness tester meets the following test criteria and other industrial and organizational test methods.

Floor space: During the operation and daily maintenance of the instrument, the floor space of each model is about 90×60cm(3×2ft).


Adjust stroke length


The length of the friction path or stroke to which the friction head moves back and forth is adjusted to 50, 76, or 104mm(2, 3, or 4 inches) to suit the size of the sample.

The adjustment of stroke length is shown in Figure 2 and is carried out according to the following steps.


Unplug the instrument from the power source.


Loosen thumb screws on the hood on the reciprocating arm and raise the hood.

This process does not require removal of the screw.


Use a flat port screwdriver to connect the drive arm to the crank screw.

Note the positioning of the gasket, which keeps a certain amount of space between the drive arm and the crank.

Move the drive arm to the appropriate position and then lock the screw.


Reinstall the shield and tighten the thumb screws.


Setting and resetting of digital counters


CSI238E operation method


The CSI238E is a manually operated instrument with a reciprocating rotating test head, which is mainly used for testing small print areas on fabrics.

Using standard weights, the friction head of 16MM diameter is in contact with the sample surface and a pressure of 11.1n is applied to it.

When the operator turns the handle in the same direction, the friction head rotates 1.125 times clockwise and then counterclockwise.

The specimen is held in place during the test by applying pressure and installing sandpaper on the base of the instrument.

The upper end of the instrument may be tilted upward along the base to facilitate mounting and dismounting of the specimen.


CSI238AA and CSI238BB are optional

Replacement of friction head


Remove the screw next to the side arm of the friction head.


Pull the friction head down from the positioning hole under the friction arm.


Insert the replacement friction head into the positioning hole and tighten it with the screw.

If the edge of the friction head is flat, the flat side should face the screw.


Acrylic friction head


The standard friction heads for CSI238AA and CSI238BB are acrylic rods of 16mm(0.63 in.) diameter.

The larger acrylic friction head provides a test surface with a diameter of 25mm(1 inch).


Wet sample friction head


Hollow nylon friction head can be selected for wet and solvent friction test.

Nylon friction head has the same size as standard friction head, but it has better chemical corrosion resistance.

There is a loading hole on the side for delivering a fixed amount of liquid uniformly to the test cloth through four side holes.

When it is filled with solvents such as MEK, it can be used to evaluate the degree of curing and abrasion of UV curing ink.

The friction head is fastened with screws on the side of the friction arm.


To ensure that the friction head is properly fixed on the arm, the standard correction cloth of the color fastness tester is first used to test and check that the resulting image is flat.


Friction block


The friction block provides a rectangular friction area of 19 x 25.4mm(0.75 x 1 inch) for testing the floor fabric.

It is connected to the driving arm by screws on the side of the friction arm.

Allen cylindrical hexagon socket screws of 10-32×20mm can be used for screws, which can be fixed and loosened manually.

After the friction block is mounted on the drive arm, the rectangular sleeve with the friction block can be used to install the test cloth.


Yarn test head


Acrylic friction heads can be used when testing yarns and linear materials.

It is 25mm(2 inches) in diameter and 51mm(2 inches) long.

With the standard friction head in place, a large circular test area is provided to prevent the material from slipping out.

The standard test cloth is held in place by two spring clamps fitted to the friction head.


Lightweight friction arm


The standard friction arms of CSI238AA and CSI238BB are loaded on the sample at pressures of 9N.

For tests requiring low pressure, we provide lightweight arms of medium weight (3N).

(This type of friction arm has no clamp, and CSI238AA USES a hook suitable for positioning holes to reduce weight.)


When replacing the friction arm, remove the screws used to tighten the drive arm and crank (note the orientation of the washer) and remove the friction arm assembly from the instrument.

Insert the new friction arm assembly into the guide rail.

Insert the washer and screw at the specified stroke length to connect the drive arm to the crank and tighten the screw
